Chapter Twelve
At the enormous entrance to what Brodie had called the Metamorphic City, two twenty-foot-tall statues stood like sentinels. They depicted proud, stoutly built dwarves, each wielding two tremendous hammers. Beneath their gaze, hundreds of dwarves passed through into what appeared to be a massive city carved from the bedrock. Peabo couldnât believe that a place so big could exist underground.
âThis place is huge!â he exclaimed.
âBah,â said Brodie. âThis is merely the outpost level, where we stage trade goods going to and coming from the aboveworld. Itâs a mere village compared to the lower-level areas. Nolan told me stories of your Wild West, newly settled lands filled with dangerous enginesââ
âIndians. There were Indians, not engines.â
Brodie shrugged. âEither way, this is like thatâa frontier level. The topmost section of Myrkheim.â
A squad of dwarven soldiers marching in lockstep stopped in front of Peabo. Unlike the dwarves in the previous group, these men looked the part of a military unit. They meant business.
Their leader, who had a brace of daggers strapped across his chest and a pair of spiked maces holstered near his waist, took in the plainswalker and frowned. âWhat in all of the hells are you doing down here, plainswalker?â
Nicole answered. âTake it easy, soldier. Weâre with him.â She hitched her thumb at Brodie.
The soldier turned to Brodie. âWhat says you, Watcher?â
âWeâre just arriving, and yes, theyâre both my guests.â
With a loud harrumph, the squad leader shook his head. âGet them registered and tagged immediately. We donât need any accidents happening.â And with that he and his squad marched away.
Brodie patted Peabo on the arm. âDonât worry, theyâre just one of the local patrols keeping things civilized. Youâre definitely not in the aboveworld anymore.â
âHe called you âWatcher,ââ said Peabo. âWhat does that mean?â
Brodie waved dismissively. âItâs just an old title. It doesnât mean anything.â
âHe also said something about being tagged?â
âAye. I have to register the two of you with the main hallâs secretary. Thatâll get you a guest armband, so youâre not mistaken for a stray ogre or other nasty.â
Peabo noted that Nicole seemed completely at ease through all of this. âHave you been down here before?â he asked her.
âAbsolutely. Though I visited through Igneous City, which is below the mainland.â
As they walked down the main thoroughfare, lined with buildings that would have dwarfed the ones in the farming town where Peabo and Nicole had made their home, Peabo felt dozens of eyes staring at him. He was a freak in this place, a good two to three feet taller than everyone around himâother than Nicole.
He muttered to himself, âNow I know how Shaquille must feel.â
âWhat?â Nicole leaned closer, putting her hand on his shoulder.
He shook his head. âItâs nothing. Iâm just very aware of how tall I am right now.â
âYou and me both. But itâs okay. These people are a bit gruffer than the folks in the aboveworld, but theyâre solid and reliable once youâve earned their trust.â
âAye, that we are,â said Brodie. âAnd believe me, I wouldnât have brought you two down here if I had any concerns about your character.
